Zinc oxide is a white powder, inorganic compound, which is insoluble in
water; Zinc Oxide is widely used as an additive in numerous applications and
products including plastics, ceramics, glass, cement, lubricants,paints,
adhesives, sealants, pigments, foods, batteries, fire retardants, and first
aid tapes.
For industrial use, Zinc Oxide can be produced by Indirect (French) process, where metallic Zinc
is melted and vaporized at temperatures around 1000 °C and zinc vapor reacts with the oxygen
in the air to give ZnO; It can be produced by Direct (American) process, where the starting
material is a contaminated zinc composites and in this case there is a carbothermal reduction
first step; finally, another important industrial production process is the Wet process, and
in this case the starting material is an aqueous solutions of purified zinc salts, from which
some zinc derivatives are precipitated, filtered, washed, dried and calcined at high
temperatures.
Main application for Zinc Oxide is in the rubber industry. Zinc oxide along with some other
chemical raw material is used in the vulcanization process; beside this application, Medical,
Food additive and Intermediate in industrial chemical production are also important at
international level.
Commercial grades of Zinc Oxide are divided by purity and particle size; and these differences
depend on the manufacturing process.
Tecnosintesi supplies Gold Seal, high purity zinc oxide, USP & Pharmaceutical grade, Green Seal Zinc oxide and Active Zinc Oxide with Surface Area (BET) equal to 45m2/gr min, which allows the reduction of the dosage level of up to 50% as compared to other zinc oxides grades.
